ADHD Evaluation:
–
Do others complain
about your child’s behavior?
–
Does your child often
seem ‘out of control’?
–
Do you suspect your
child may have ADHD but you have never sought an ADHD evaluation?
If the answer is yes to
any of these questions, your child may benefit from a psychological
evaluation specifically focused on ADHD. Because misdiagnosis can
lead to failed interventions later down the road, we believe it is
important to be certain of
any diagnosis. Therefore, Jewell Psychological Services uses a best
practices approach to performing evaluations for ADHD. Below is a
description of our plan to evaluate for ADHD as well as answers to
frequently asked questions.
-
A typical evaluation for ADHD includes:
-
A face-to-face meeting with you and your child. At this
meeting, you will be asked to complete questionnaires on
your child’s behavior. We will also gather information from
you in an interview, and will spend time with your child as
well.
-
An assistant trained in coding behavioral observation data
will go to your child’s classroom at a prearranged day and
time. Your child’s behavior will be coded as on-task,
off-task, or disruptive. Your child’s behavior will be
compared to the behavior of two other randomly selected
children in the classroom. The assistant will have your
child’s teacher fill out a similar questionnaire.
-
Once the questionnaires have been scored and the report
written, we will call you to schedule a feedback session. At
that session, we will present the conclusions of the
evaluation, which include the presence or absence of an ADHD
diagnosis as well as recommendations for how to help your
child at home and school.

What if I don’t want my child to take
medication for ADHD?
-
We respect every parent’s right to determine the proper
treatment for their child.
-
Dr. Jewell is not a medical doctor and does not prescribe
medication for any disorder.
-
We will make behavioral recommendations for the parent,
teacher and child with the goal of alleviating or
accommodating the child’s ADHD behavior.
-
Depending on the diagnosis, we may or may not recommend in the report that parents should seek an evaluation from a child and adolescent psychiatrist to determine
whether any medications might be helpful.
